Old School Kingfish Shootout returns to Vilano Beach Saturday

The Old School Kingfish Shootout returns to Vilano Beach on Saturday, June 13, for its seventh year. Fishing starts at 7 a.m., with weigh-in from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at the Vilano Beach Pier. The captain who lands the biggest fish takes home a 21-foot boat with a 200-horsepower outboard and trailer — a prize package valued at $130,000 — with $10,000 for second place and payouts through the top 25. The format caps anglers at 3 miles offshore between St. Simons Island and New Smyrna Beach, a limit the tournament director says should keep fuel needs down even with marine fuel prices that neared $6 per gallon around the state at the start of June. Last year's tournament drew 695 boats, including roughly 400 Lady Angler and nearly 390 Junior Angler entries, divisions that expand their prize lists this year. Captain's meetings move to the Ancient City Farmstead north of St. Augustine at 4 and 7 p.m. on June 12, and the same venue hosts the June 14 awards ceremony. (St. Augustine Record)

Two shark bites in three days on the Panhandle

Two people were injured by sharks within three days on the Florida Panhandle: a man bitten by a bull shark on June 5 after hooking it while fishing near the Fort Pickens jetties on Pensacola Beach, and a second person hospitalized June 8 after a shark encounter at a marina in the Panama City area. Florida leads the nation in shark bites — 11 in 2025, about 44 percent of the U.S. total — but most incidents happen on the Atlantic coast, and researchers put the odds of a fatal attack at roughly 1 in 4.3 million. Each of the show's three farmers chooses one woman to continue a relationship with off the show, and the episode streams on Hulu starting Wednesday. (St. Augustine Record)

Revolutionary War exhibit opens at the Governor's House

St. Augustine spent the Revolutionary War as the capital of British East Florida, and an exhibit at the Governor's House Cultural Center and Museum, 48 King Street, tells that story for America's 250th anniversary. Residents here burned two signers of the Declaration of Independence in effigy, Britain supplied the city with funds and provisions, and thousands of colonists loyal to the Crown fled to St. Augustine — some enslaved people were encouraged to flee to Florida to fight for the British in exchange for freedom. The exhibit is free and on view daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through September 2026. (Visit St. Augustine)
